Biocompatibility is a property of any medical material that is used in contact with a living body. A material that is obtained by artificially modifying a natural material will also be included as a biomaterial. It can be divided into bulk biocompatibility and interfacial biocompatibility. Despite the fact that soft tissues are made of typical hydrogels namely, high-water content gels synthetic hydrogels are used very little as biomaterials except for use in soft contact lenses. Synthetic hydrogels nevertheless remain useful biomaterials, depending on their application.
