Chemical Catalysis

#MatCongress2021

The catalysis of a certain reaction can be mediated either by a biological or chemical catalyst. Enzymes and whole cells make up the biological group, while the chemical group can be said to include all non-enzymatic catalysts. Some reactions can be catalysed by both groups of catalysts, while the catalyst used is not interchangeable in other. The choice of catalyst depends on a number of factors, including the nature of the reaction, the substrate to be transformed, and the type of solvent used. Catalysts are substances that increase the reaction rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed in the process. A catalyst, therefore, does not appear in the overall stoichiometry of the reaction it catalyzes, but it must appear in at least one of the elementary reactions in the mechanism for the catalyzed reaction.
