Photorefractive materials operate through a multi-step process: (a) photogeneration of electric charge carriers caused by the absorption of light; (b) transport of the charge carriers within the material; (c) trapping and storing of the charge carriers at defect sites, generating a space-charge electric field; and (d) modulation of the optical properties of the material through the electrooptic effect, which changes the absorption or the refractive index of a material by the presence of an electric field. In the photorefractive effect, a spatial light pattern generates a similar space-charge electric field pattern and therefore a similar pattern for the refractive index or the absorption. In photorefractive applications, the light pattern is a hologram generated by interfering laser beams.
